Rounding Work – In many instances the smoothing plane is held and manipulated by the right hand only, as in the case of rounding up a broom handle or making a blind roller. For rounding up small lengths of timber for dowels, or round curtain rods, it is usual to make and keep a wooden cradle as Fig. 132. This consists of a 1 in. or1¾ in. board, into which a groove is worked at the edge. A small piece of wood (A) is let into the board to act as a stop whilst planing up the rod or roller. The rod, which is first of all planed up square is laid in the groove cornerways as shown, and the corners are planed away until it becomes octagonal in shape; it is again reduced until all the corners are worked away, thus leaving the wood an approximate cylinder. A simple cradle of this type will prevent the worker from shaving the skin from the tips of his fingers or thumb.
